Understanding Topeka’s Music Community

The Topeka Music Census is a community-led effort to better understand the people, places, and challenges shaping the local music ecosystem, including musicians, venues, educators, promoters, engineers, DJs, photographers, nonprofits, retailers, media, and creative entrepreneurs.

Currently, this program is in development, but if you’d like to join the effort, please click here to connect with us.

We want to hear from you.

The census will be live for two weeks in July 2026. We will post additional details, links and more information as it becomes available.

The data and findings will be made publicly accessible through reports, dashboards, and community presentations so the entire community can benefit from the results.

Led locally by Arts Connect, the Topeka Music Census is part of Kansas Music Cities Together, a year-long program designed to help Kansas communities better understand, connect, and support their local music ecosystems.

It's About Community

Topeka is home to an incredible community of artists, musicians, performers, creatives, and cultural organizations that help make our city vibrant, welcoming, and unique. This effort led by ArtsConnect in partnership with the Kansas Arts Commission and Sound Music Cities supported by Movement Musick. This community census is an opportunity to better understand the people, organizations, and creative activity that shape our local cultural ecosystem.

By gathering important information about our creative community, we can make informed, data-driven decisions that strengthen the arts, support local talent, and help ensure that creativity continues to thrive in Topeka for years to come.

But this effort is about more than data. It is about connection.

The census creates an opportunity for artists, performers, cultural organizations, creative entrepreneurs, and community members to come together around a shared vision for Topeka’s future. By participating, you help build a stronger network of creative voices that can work collectively to identify opportunities, address challenges, and champion the role of the arts in our community.

Whether the conversation centers on supporting artists, expanding access to arts experiences, growing cultural tourism, strengthening creative careers, improving community health and well-being, or exploring new opportunities for collaboration, this census will help bring our community together to shape what comes next.

The Topeka Community Arts Census is open to anyone age 18 or older who contributes to Topeka’s creative and cultural community in any capacity, whether paid or unpaid. We also encourage participation from those who live in Topeka and contribute to creative work beyond the city limits.
